Madurai is one of the prominent and prestigious cities in Tamil Nadu an Indian state, this place is popularly known as temple city.
Madurai is the oldest city that has been continuously inhabited with population and is located on the banks of Vaigai River at Madurai District. It is also referred to as a city of four junctions and it also takes the third position among the various cities to have higher population and when compared as per the area covered Madurai is the second city in entire Tamilnadu. The city Madurai is also referred to as Koodal or Thirvalavai and the name Madurai is suggested to have come from the Sanskrit word Mathura which means “sweetness”.
Madurai is also famous for the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple which is surrounded by this city, and on seeing the aerial view of the city it gives the feel of lotus. The most prominent language spoken in Madurai is Tamil with standard dialect along with several other languages like English and Urdu. Madurai being an oldest city is also famous for diversified cultural bonds and religious harmony, there are three religious heads which are together called as Mummadha Thalaivargal when translated meaning Leaders of the three religions who make constant efforts to maintain harmony in Madurai.
Madurai also has good transport facilities which connect it to the entire nation through rail, road and even air. There are several bus stands which are almost busy with numerous buses since Madurai is connected to nearly four national highways bridges and flyovers have been constructed to connect the city with other places across the river. There is an airport located at 12 kms distance from the city and it also has flights to some of the major cities in India, internationalization of the airport is being considered and is expected to reach sooner.
